The Basics Of Backhoes

Bulldozers, tractors, backhoes or bobcats, the average consumer seems to use the words synonymously. However, each of these items have very different uses in the construction and farming world. Backhoes, which were originally developed by the British company JCB in 1953, set the standard for the look of the tractor-like machine with the back-digging bucket and arm. Backhoes can come designed as a piece of heavy machinery or they can be formulated from a tractor that is modified to include attachments like a front end loader and rear hoe. The pre-designed ones are much stronger and used primarily in construction while the modified ones are better for light farming work.

Hydraulic powered attachments like the tiltrotator, breaker, grapple and auger make the backhoe more frequently used in projects other than construction and excavation. For example, the tiltrotator attachment added to the backhoes make a very effective tool carrier. You'll also see that many backhoes have a quick coupler mounting systems that allow for simplified attachment mounting. This cuts down the time it takes to change out attachments on a job. Together with loaders and bulldozers, these are the main heavy equipment used by farmers and construction companies alike.

Big name backhoe companies include Garmin, Iseki, Yanmar, Honomoto and of course, John Deere. When looking to buy one or rent, you need to decide first of all the type of machine needed. Keep in mind that backhoes are best for a medium sized job. The digging depth for a full sized backhoe is going to be between 14-16 feet. If you need deeper than that, you would probably want to go with a full sized digger instead. For depths smaller than that, you would probably want to use a compact backhoe that would go between 8 and 10 feet. Don't go overboard when it comes to attachments as they can be rented as the need presents it's self. However, if you see that you would be using the various baskets and other attachments on a regular basis, you may want to look for some used ones for sale in the marketplace.
